Garage Gym Conversions

How much does a garage gym conversion cost in the UK?

Last updated · 5 min read

Our fully insulated garage gym conversions start from £4,500 for a typical single garage. That covers insulated walls and ceiling, rubber gym flooring, LED lighting, sockets and a plastered, painted finish. Double garages, door changes, mirrors, panelling, heating, extra electrics and structural work add to that, and we price all of it into one fixed quote after a free survey.

What our £4,500 starting price includes

Our starting price is for a typical single garage where the structure is sound, the existing door stays in place and the room needs a standard gym fit-out. For that, we insulate and board the walls and ceiling, plaster and paint them, lay heavy-duty rubber gym flooring, fit LED lighting and add sockets where your kit will sit. A qualified electrician installs and certifies the electrics.

We also deal with damp before any finishes go on. During the survey we look at the slab, the walls, the door seals and the ground outside, and we build the right fix into the quote. If the garage is dry and sound, the room goes together quickly and the price stays close to our starting figure.

  • Insulated, boarded and plastered walls and ceiling
  • Heavy-duty rubber gym flooring
  • LED lighting suited to training
  • Sockets, installed and certified
  • Painted finish, ready to train in

What pushes the price up

Most projects include at least one extra. None of them are hidden: we list each one in the quote so you can see exactly where the money goes and drop anything you do not need.

  • Double garage: more floor, wall and ceiling area to insulate, board and finish.
  • New garage door: an insulated door keeps the look of a garage and lets you open up in summer.
  • Bricked-up opening: we infill the door with a new wall, usually with a window or door, which brings in building regulations and extra time.
  • Mirror walls: full-height gym mirrors fixed flat and secure, placed around your rack and lifting area.
  • Wall panelling: hard-wearing panels that protect walls from plates and bars and give a finished look.
  • Heating: electric heating or air conditioning for year-round comfort.
  • Extra electrics: dedicated circuits for treadmills or air conditioning, TV and speaker points, more sockets.
  • Structural steel: where we widen an opening, remove a wall or support a roof, we bring in a structural engineer and allow for the steel.

What is never included

Where building regulations apply, the local authority building control fee goes directly to the council. We handle the application and the inspections, but the fee itself is set by the council and paid by you, so it is never part of our quote. We tell you at the survey whether your project needs it.

Gym equipment is also separate. We plan the room around the kit you have or plan to buy, so sockets, mirrors and flooring sit in the right places, but we do not supply racks, weights or machines.

How this compares to general garage conversions

General garage conversions into bedrooms, offices or living space are commonly quoted at higher figures, often well into five figures, because they usually include plumbing, new windows, heating systems and fully habitable finishes. A gym needs a different specification: a strong, protective floor, bright light, good ventilation and power in the right places. We build exactly that, which is why our starting price sits where it does.

Rubber mats in a cold garage versus a fully insulated room

Laying rubber mats in an untouched garage is the cheapest way to train at home, and for some people it is enough. The trouble shows up within a season. An uninsulated garage is cold in winter, hot in summer and damp most of the year. Condensation forms on the walls and on your equipment, bars and plates rust, and the room is unpleasant enough that sessions get skipped.

A fully insulated room fixes that at the source. We insulate the walls and ceiling, deal with damp, add ventilation and finish the room properly, so it stays comfortable all year and your kit stays dry. You end up with a room you actually use, not a cold space you put up with.

Why we quote a fixed price after a survey

Every garage is different. Two garages on the same street can have different slabs, roofs, damp issues and power supplies. Guessing a price from photos means either padding it to cover surprises or adding costs halfway through, and neither is fair to you.

So we visit first. The survey is free. We measure the room, check the slab, the roof, the walls and the door, look at where the power comes from and talk through how you train. Then we send one written fixed price for the whole job. That price is what you pay, unless you choose to change the specification.

How to keep costs down

Keeping the existing door and insulating behind it is the biggest saving for most people. Planning the equipment layout before we start also helps, because we fit sockets and mirrors once, in the right place. If budget is tight, we can build the room now and leave panelling or extra mirrors for later, with the wiring ready.

Key points

  • Fully insulated garage gym conversions start from £4,500 for a typical single garage.
  • Double garages, door changes, mirrors, panelling, heating, extra electrics and structural steel add to the price.
  • The council building control fee is paid directly to the council and is never in our quote.
  • An insulated room stays warm and dry and protects your kit, unlike mats in a cold garage.
  • We quote one fixed price after a free survey.

Questions

Is the £4,500 price for a single or double garage?

It is our starting price for a typical single garage with the existing door kept. Double garages cost more because there is more area to insulate, floor and finish. We confirm the price for your garage at the survey.

Will the price change once work starts?

No. We quote a fixed price after the survey and that is what you pay, unless you ask us to change or add something.

Do you charge for the survey?

No. The survey and the written quote are free.
