How much does a garage gym conversion cost?
Fully insulated garage gym conversions start from £4,500 for a typical single garage. That covers insulated walls and ceiling, rubber gym flooring, LED lighting, sockets and a plastered and painted finish. Double garages, door changes, mirror walls, panelling, heating and extra electrics add to the price. Every project gets a fixed quote after a free survey.
Do I need planning permission to convert my garage into a gym?
Usually not. Converting the inside of an existing garage is normally covered by permitted development, as long as you are not extending the building or changing how it looks in a significant way. Planning may be needed if your property is listed, in a conservation area, or if permitted development rights have been removed. We check this at the survey stage.
Does a garage gym conversion need building regulations approval?
If the garage becomes a habitable part of the house, building regulations usually apply, covering insulation, ventilation, electrics and fire safety. If the garage door opening is bricked up, that work needs approval too. We handle the building regulations process for you. The local authority building control fee is paid directly to the council.
How is the garage insulated?
We insulate the walls and ceiling with rigid insulation boards, then board and plaster over them. Where the floor needs it, we add insulation or a damp-proof membrane beneath the flooring. The aim is a room that stays comfortable to train in all year round.
What flooring do you use?
We fit heavy-duty rubber gym flooring as standard. It protects the slab, absorbs impact from dropped weights and is easy to keep clean. Thicker or specialist flooring for lifting platforms can be added.
Is my garage ceiling high enough for a gym?
Most garages have enough height for general training. Overhead pressing and some rack setups need more room, so we measure ceiling height at the survey and talk through what will fit. Where possible we plan the layout around the highest part of the space.
My garage is damp. Can it still be converted?
In most cases, yes. We look for the source of the damp during the survey. Typical fixes include a damp-proof membrane on the floor, sealing gaps, improving drainage and adding ventilation. Damp is dealt with before any finishes go on.
What electrics are included?
Standard conversions include LED lighting and double sockets, installed and certified by a qualified electrician. Extra sockets, dedicated circuits for treadmills or air conditioning, TV points and speaker wiring can all be added.
How long does a garage gym conversion take?
A typical build takes a few weeks from start to handover. Single garages with the existing door kept are the quickest. Bricking up a door, structural work or a double garage add time. We give you a timescale with your fixed quote.
Can I keep my garage door?
Yes. Many clients keep their existing garage door and we insulate behind it or build an insulated stud wall inside it. You can also replace it with an insulated door, or have the opening bricked up with a window or door fitted.
Can you convert both single and double garages?
Yes. Single garages suit a focused setup such as a rack, bench and cardio machine. Double garages give room for a full gym, separate zones or a mix of gym and storage. Double garages cost more because there is more space to insulate and finish.
Do you convert integral and detached garages?
Yes, both. Integral garages are attached to the house and often need fire separation and building regulations approval. Detached garages may need a new power supply run from the house. We cover the specifics in your quote.
Do I need to empty the garage before you start?
Yes, the garage needs to be clear when the build begins so we can work safely and protect your belongings. We will agree the start date with you well in advance so there is time to clear it.
Which areas do you cover?
We work across North East England, including Durham, Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, Northumberland, Teesside and the surrounding areas. Our base is in Sacriston, Durham.
